Nope it's a closed source budget Web CMS (so I guess their primary competitors are OSS)

Last time I checked it was open source once you had bought it...

But it's not open source as in free, doesn't Alfresco have a similar business model and still is considered open source by most?

To be open source it's required that you follow a valid OSI approved license. It's not enough that you can buy the rights to view the source as it's not free. You can't redistribute the source and there's still restrictions.

Alfrescos model is true open source (their product is GPL as far as I recall)

Heh, I just clicked a link for that and came across their "30-day trial download" and thought "this doesn't seem super open-sourcey to me..." Googled really quickly and found you. So yeah, won't follow up with them.

The image above is NOT a promotion that Kentico is Open Source Software (OSS). The Google search for "open source .net cms kentico" pulls up their ad because their ad contains the word "open" used in a different context regarding their API, not the Source.

Kentico is a great CMS product with a free option as well as cost effective alternatives with larger feature sets.
