Hms Ardent
Portsmouth March 1979
Im in this photo as well the last figure near the gun nearest the Exocets. I was doing my special sea duty entering and leaving harbour routine.
I did do it 50/50 with a CEM who did not like the early morinng ones and so i missed the ramming by the Panamanian grain coaster three weeks after the ship was commisioned when we were coming back into Portsmouth at night.
The effects of that collision can be seen poorly in this photo mind but the new sheet can be seen just below the gun, where the damage was cut out and replaced. My job at specials in this was to rig up a telephone link to the bridge and call out all the orders from the bridge, ie weigh anchor ,double up single up ect. The most unusual thing I got told to say was "Watch out for Doris" I had to ask them to repeat that . Doris turned out to be a tug.
