Mennock Water
Below the second telegraph pole on the riverbank is a exposed section of Clogau Shale that I contend is the basis of the major contributor to the gold in the Mennock. This section just over a mile upriver from Glen Clach bridge is probably still the richest section of the river but hiding the biggest nuggets in the river under 12 to 20 ft of gravel is not uncommon and exactly the reason the golds still there. But saw last September a guy get out several gram nuggets from this section in a few days sluicing. Note the position the photo is taken from is the last place possible to park up before the bridge a mile downstream. Also making access not easy to these virgin areas for sustained goldpanning. But this section can be panned all winter.
