The Devils Beef Tub was the Wild West equivalent of the fabled hole in the wall. Scottish cattle raiders used to hide the cattle up in this extremely steep crater valley. There is gold in the burns in the crater. Note the rugged mountains and landscape , whilst here to see the view a search and rescue helicopter was searching for a missing mountaineer. A few miles along the A701 as the hill starts to slope downward a boggy field on the left as you drive to Tweedsmuir is the source of the river Tweed. To get to the burns in the Devil,s Beef Tub you need to drive all the way back to moffat and drive up the valley. If you notice the terrain you will appreciate there are lots more gold rivers undiscovered.
