why is the water so red??

It is so red in the salt evaporation and crystallisation ponds at the salinas where the water has very high salinity. A micro-algae Dunaliella salina likes to live in such conditions. To survive, these organisms have high concentrations of carotenoids to protect against the intense sunlight and that gives a typical red colour of these salt pans.

aaahhhh Cool!!

Love to know new things every day :D

....oohh by the way, I've seen some (real pretty) pink salt from the Himalayas.... do you think that the salt stays that color cause there are more Dunaliella salina at those places??? ((:

Euzke, dear, thanks a lot for your questions! They make me to learn so many new things, indeed. I have never heard about this pink salt! Himalayan Pink Salt is a pure hand-mined salt harvested from ancient sea salt deposits in the Himalayan Mountains.
As the authors say: " The high mineral crystals range in color from sheer white, varying shades of pink, to deep reds, the result of high mineral and iron content." ... and not carotenoids of (eventually) Dunaliella.

Heeeheee, Euzmarita, with so many people interested in the thematic, we have to propose a new photo-group here - 23 school (or 23 university, yeeep! :)))

Muitos beijos para dos! :***)

Very interesting as well....Thank you for looking for the explanation :)

you know, I've always liked rocks and their composition... when I was a child I loved to pick pebbles while I was having a walk or hiking at the mountains and regognize if they had more copper, or suffer or other minerals in their composition.... it is cool cause by that you can see that the flora and fauna of the place
is different as well :D

ahahahahahhaahhaaa..... A school???? For sure!!!! I would love to :D
