Perhaps, this is kind of tactic plant movement (like photo-tropism) which depend on the light and touch of the hard surface. All these movements are due to a chemical coordination within the plant cells. It's very interesting and if I have any opportunity to find some colleagues who work on plant physiology I'll ask them. :D
