The appendix is a tube, a structure of the colon that resembles a pouch, located near the hip bone, where the small and large intestines meet. It has no known biological purpose but develops from birth. However, as recently as 2007, studies have proposed that the appendix hosts useful bacteria that helps the body recover during illness.
