Number one, that whole "what if he was on the mainland" argument is bullshit, and pointless. maybe he'd make a name in NYC, maybe he wouldn't, but until he moves there, who cares? all we can really do is debate the merits of real work in the real world.
The reality: phyto is up as fuck, and has been for five years now, which is a marathon in graff terms. Looking at my collection's statistics, he's one of the top three most prolific writers in Hawaii, based on the number of flicks I've caught since 2003. He's also all over the island, geographically speaking.
He might not do a lot of super intricate pieces, but piecing is far from the be-all and end-all of graff. Phyto's a street bomber, first and foremost, but he also brings a whole lot of creativity and originality to the table. Look back through my flicks, and you'll see a damn arsenal of solid throws and hands.
To cap it off, everything he does is super clean. The man can rock a line like few others, be it with a pen or a can. Bottom line, seeing his stuff makes me happy.
Maybe you don't see it, and that's cool, but a lot of people do, which is why you hear about him.
Oh, and as for your assertion that hawaii's scene is weak, i guess you're just a glass-half-empty kind of guy, because there's plenty of good shit around. sure there could always be more, but that's true anywhere.

you may think that this shit is lame, that mainland shit blows our little hawaii away. this is fucking hawaii, not the mainland, so why even mention it? maybe if he was in the fucking mainland he would put in more work don't you think? and phyto's my hero, i never get tired of seeing his work. fuck the mainland and it's fucked up stuck up writers. this is hawaii

Im glad you've "heard a lot" about me. I'm flattered you took the time to write an essay and critique everything i've done up until this point. You're the reason why i do graffiti. Theres more haters in this game than anything and the fact that you even consider me "average" is cool. Thats like a C+ right!?! Still passing in my book. I never claimed to be any status. I dont put crowns on my shit. And i'll be the first one to say my shit is toy. So ease up on this "legend" hype and just do "your" thing. If you don't like it...cross that shit out. You wouldn't be the first. And by the way...I have painted in the mainland. To me shit is easier up there with miles and miles of freeway. And besides the weather is cold up there, im too tropical for that. And if i can recall the last time some "Mainland" writers came down they got popped and made the front page headlines. But hey...Hawaii is weak and we all paint 24/7 with hula skirts on. Thanks again Dave, sorry for rattling your maxi pad. Im a legend in my own mind.

See here, phyto is a perfect example of not following trends as the youngs folks say. He does straight, bubbles, hands,and throwies with worms in it...how originall could that get! No burners, no wildstyle with trippy 3d..but simple, clean and down right outstand throws and hands. And yes, i have to say ive been to the mainland and seen a number of hands and throwies on the freeway but you only got like 3,000 something miles to drive away from cops so who WOULDNT go bombing everynight up there. Hawaii is a world of its own with its own style and own taste, not caring how we SIZE UP TO THE COMPETION but doing it outta pure love and devotion for the art. It just shows no matter hwo simple you can be you can get into top notch crews such as TAO.
Dave, maybe you should think twice before critising one of the best in hawaii. If your so in love with the mainland steeze then by all means im sure phyto will send your ass packing. Enjoi davey boy.

well my piece of cake is that phyto is one of the first names i've seen when i started out. dave, i think you should mind your own and go home, where you belong, not here, where you suck and all you can do is sit here and diss one of the biggest street bombers in our state. yeah mainland is sweet but hawaii is what its about. so dont ruin our fun just cuz you cant pull off shit as tight as the PHYTO.
