Though it was commonly claimed by Mahinda Rajapakse Government that this war was won due to the efforts of then President Mahinda Rajapakse and his brother, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, the people of Sri Lanka knew that the true hero of this victory was none other than General Sarath Fonseka, the Commander of the of the Sri Lanka Army that defeated the ruthless LTTE terrorists and finally called a halt to this war. Having had a thus far exemplary military career, General Sarath Fonseka then decided to go into politics as a Presidential Candidate, vowing to free Sri Lanka from corruption, just as he had freed Sri Lanka from terrorism.
