you will laugh but I puzzled over that left/right bank thing for years. It seemed every map I saw took it for granted that you knew...
and then it can be very confusing when going this direction on the bateaux mouches tour...

@striatic, no, I didn't write that. It was right there. And never ask anyone French about east or west, they haven't got a clue. It took me years of practice to figure the Right Bank/ Left Bank thing out

@drsara, a few weeks ago, when I took a walk with a friend, I went in the area of Grande Bibliothèque and got mixed up not knowing if I was on the Left Bank or Right Bank. I am not much of a map reader either.
When I use maps on the iPhone, I never know which direction to start, as I have no idea where is south or north or whatever. :(

@claudecf, what I couldn't figure out was how the left/right thing was figured according to the river's flow. Now that I know which is which, it makes sense - left is on the left because the water's flowing from inland to the sea. I am one of those strange people who makes little maps in my mind...
@striatic - I would think of left bank as to the southwest - more or less, kinda sorta...
