see? Frau Feli you must come to Amerika and miss d will take us here!!
And Frau Feli, I agree with b! I would love to take you both to this wonderful place!!
And girls, I have another book recommendation. The lions and the library remind me of it. A WONDERFUL picture book called Library Lion http://www.candlewick.com/book_files/0763622621.kit.1.pdf
You'll see the link is a PDF of storytime ideas, but added because there are illustrations included from the book and I wanted to give you more of a sense of it than just the book description. B, I don't know if you ever look at picture books, but this one I recommend because it might help you with your lessons. ;)
And best Bere, I'm just at answering your niiiiice letter! Lots of Love!!
I'd love to tell you the story! The librarian and her assistant (the man you saw in the illustrations) are old-school, old-fashioned librarians. One day, a lion shows up at the library and nobody quite knows what to make of it. The assistant tattles to the librarian, but she tells him that the lion can visit the library as long as he follows library rules. One of those rules is that you have to be quiet in the library. The assistant feels threatened by the lion, esp. when the librarian starts using the lion to help her out with chores (he dusts the shelves with his tail, etc.). One day, the lion walks into the librarian's office and finds her standing on a chair reaching very high, she loses her balance, falls and can't get up. The lion went to the assistant for help. He tried and tried to get the assistant's attention, but it didn't work. The assistant deliberately ignored him. The only way he could get the man's attention was to roar in his face. (You were right about the roaring!) The lion knew that he had broken the rules, so he left the library. And didn't return. Everyone missed him (the children, the librarian, etc.) except the assistant who felt smug about the whole thing. Until he realizes how sad everyone is. So, he goes out looking for the lion, finds him, and soon enough, the lion is back at the library. When the lion returns, the assistant approaches the librarian and quietly, simply tells her "There's a lion in the library." And everyone is so happy. My description really doesn't do it justice but it gives you an idea. I tear up every time I get to the last bit of the book. Silly, but it gets me every time!
I haven't used the storytime materials I linked here, but I have used the book in storytime with younger kids. Plus, I had a class of Kindergarten/1st Graders who visited the store. They didn't have time to do activities after we read, but I read this story and one other one to them. Then the teacher told them they could vote on which one to have her buy for the classroom. I was very happy when they picked Library Lion! I was afraid the kids might not like it so much because the library experience for kids today (at least here) is very, very different from that told in the story. Was afraid it wouldn't resonate with them. But it did!
