The DoC office warned me that the bridge at the start of the Routeburn track was down but I headed up there anyway, with a slight hope that I might be able to wade the river. In fact the bridge wasn't down; there were just people working on it. They had dug a big hole at one end but provided I didn't blame them if I slipped into the river (which was actually far too fast and deep to wade), they let me through. I was very grateful and was pleased to get a day's taster of the low part of this track.
