Impressiv construction; is there a story behind it?
Andy Rodker September 23, 2018, 09:28 PM
Remmelt, yes.
Hidden under mining waste, Dr Borlase, an amateur 19th century archaeolgist, thought there was something in all the rubble. He found this tomb and went to work to reveal it and explore further. Unfortunately he radically distorted the layout and put it back together in what he thought might have been the original version. Not really his fault, he had the vision but not the equipment to do the job he might have wished with hindsight.
Nevertheless it has been established that it is a bronze age barrow and tentatively of the type known as a Scillonian burial mound. Today it is commonly known as Ballowall Barrow.

19th century amateurs sometimes did things that archeologists of today hate, even as the results often are more plesant to look at as todays reconstructions where every modern addition is marked so it would not look like it once was either. We have lots of that here abouts too, restaurated medieval murals, rebuilt roman fortifications and repaired stone age pottery with big caveat texts attached how that early historism discovery harmed and distorted the item, but still more popular with the crowd for you can imagine better that it was a nice time with a culture having pretty stuff if you see it all looking like whole.
