Oak tree death by longhorn beetle larvae. The larvae transmit disease into the tree and it sheds branches first before eventually dying. The fight is on to save Spain's iconic encinas (holm oaks) and Pyrenean oaks

We've had issues with the dreaded longhorn beetle here, too. Not epidemic levels yet because NYC's parks department is very aggressive in dealing with reports of possibly infected trees... Any confirmed signs of beetle activity and the tree(s) are quickly cut down and disposed of. The non-native creepy crawlies are rarely a good thing =/

They've been aggressive here too and let's hope their efforts are successful. The landscape and ecosystems would be completely changed if this got out of control.

Ooops ... we have oaks dying in the neighborhood! Did not know about the beetles :( .

Yeah, same here! Our parks are dominated by Oaks. They're also among the most plentiful native trees. Invaluable to wildlife -- both native & migratory. If these nasties take hold they would decimated native forests through the eastern 1/4 of the US and quite a bit of Canada, too. The habitat loss would cause catastrophic losses to native wildlife that depends on Oaks for food -- shelter, too, to some extent, but more critically food to get them through the lean winter months.

Them things have been found in other types of tree here, too. Apparently London Plane & certain Maple trees aren't 100% safe either.

In Spain, these beetle larvae have become a major pest. I haven't yet looked into their effect in other places but oak die-back is common in the UK. Maybe from a different cause?
But worrying, whatever the causes.

Eeek, I don't like tree killing pests! We don't have that one, but always a fight against Spruce Bark Beetle ( Ips typographus ) in the timber patch. Niklas the storm actually did us a favor, tearing down much of the non-native needle trees of the previous generation prematurely, allowing for clearing wide areas and start over with other species. A few of the new baby trees are oaks, but there is more beech and maple in the mix. But there is a pest for anything you plant now it seems...

Longhorn Bettles however are a huge family, with many harmless and even benevolent and charming members. Please be precise which one is the bad guy you have here! I assume it's the Asian Long-horned Beetle a.k.a. Starry Sky Beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis).

Wish I could help. Sonja but the Wikipedia and Google entries just confused me completely. Please may ask you to look this up for all of us (you obviously have a better understanding of the subject than me!). I would be interested to know the answer.
We could wait until I go back and photo the information board in the park (which I should have done before of course!) but I don't how long that will be!
Thank you and best wishes,
Andy

It IS the Asian Longhorn Beetle that's the culprit behind this kind of damage in many countries it invades.

Many thanks, Fizgig!

It seems to grow into a very handsomely patterned adult, but what an awfully destructive larva he is!

Yes, a very handsome beetle!
