I'd never seen one before. They're big - 3 inches/5 centimetres long.

Oh, cool find! It's long I met my first one. In the camargue at the Pont du Grau bird park that was. It also walked across the path and I was very amazed at the size and habitus of that insect. Indeed not reminding of a tiny black cricket, more like a piece of fantasy H0 constuction machinery come to life....

Thank you Sonja. Not the most handsome of insects but fascinating to see nonetheless!

I think they do exist in the UK but I'm not 100% sure. I will have to look it up!
Thanks and best wishes,
Andy

Steve, just found out that they are thought not to be native but have been imported accidentally with plants in containers. There has been found one breeding colony in Oxfordshire. In all 18 specimens have been reported between 1981 and 2005. This from Chris Packham on Inside Out from 2005. www.bbc.co.uk>series8>week_one
Best wishes, Andy

Perhaps this is why Australian boarder patrol is so very keen to keep none native species OUT Andy .. we have already seen what can happen with the Grey Squirrel and American Signal Crayfish

Eeek! Reminds me of the cat-sized cockroaches in Hawaii! They walk down the sidewalk at night.

Diane, I tried to get it to wave its mole like digging claws for the camera but it was having none of it! If you google mole cricket you can see what I mean. It almost becomes cute! (but not quite!).
