Parents and Guardians,

Some of you may have seen the recent NBC Dateline show discussing concerns about the MySpace website and other similar "journaling" websites. The www.MySpace.com, www.Facebook.com, and www.Xanga.com sites offer opportunities for students to create homepages that unwittingly share personal information that could allow strangers to communicate with students and track down their location. In addition, the content of some users' homepages is of an adult nature.

Please continue to monitor your student's internet use carefully to ensure they are not sharing private and personal information inappropriately.

In addition, please be aware that students cannot access Facebook.com from any Howard County Public School System computer, and MySpace and Xanga will shortly be added to that list. However, in the rapidly changing landscape of websites, new sites may pop up that encourage students to share personal information. Your communication with your student is the best way to educate your student about safe internet use.

Thank you,
Marcy Leonard
Principal

LOL!
