It is the remains of a rather simple sidewing, a place where servants lived with diverse utility rooms below. Most of the regency manor was destroyed in a fire early in te 20th century. Later a farming family lived for several decades in that sad reminder of the ruin. I guess the new botanical garden had to invest a lot of money to make it look just a bit more splendid than its former self and have all technical hopla of modern times inside to work as a representable conference center. The yellow was taken from an old depiction of the whole thing as the whole facade looked once, the end formerly connected to the main building and after the fire only closed as cheap as ot goes was gently redesigned to match the style of the surviving outer walls and the roof railing in the other 3 directions. To the right of this picture is a lawn bearing outlines of foundations and a few history markers about Middleton Hall. The high walled garden to the left today sports a formal planting with decorative cultivars and a sculpture of Alfred Russel Wallace. Long ago it was probaply the least grand one, just some open space adjoining a kitchen and laundry tract with own exit.
