No cause to be sad, Betty! :o) Go on a bright day to a place with lots of birds, wait for a bird that preferably goes slow and has to work hard against the wind, take as many shots as possible and hope for luck. At the next opportunity vary the shutter speed and the exposure, sometimes use your hand on the manual ring, sometimes the autofocus, just vary and take many, many series whilst sitting at your vantage point. It is far more likely than to get all the right numbers in the lottery to catch a rather okay flight shot this way. That's what I do.
