Pretty roan! Poor girl needs some netting to protect her eyes from the bothersome flies... Nice capture!

Really? Horses in nature do not need masks and coats and stuff. I hoped this is just a hardy sort with that interesting fur colour almost like the beautiful Przewalski's.

Sonja.... Wild horses have diff't immunities and tolerances.... If you look closely, you can see the swelling of the mucous membranes around the animal's eyes indicating that the flies are indeed having an adverse effect --- this sort of thing could lead to infections of the eyes which are very painful. Interestingly, too, as I've noticed with my own horses, not all horses have the same sensitivity either. My Gypsy Vanners, American Paint, Mustang, Friesians & Belgian aren't bothered that much by flies, but my Andalusians & Arabians need eye protection most summers. I think it's due, in part, to the nature of the diff't breeds.... The ones with the long manes & tails also tend to have thicker eyelashes besides part of their manes flowing over their eyes to protect them naturally. And the American Paint & Mustang are designed by nature to handle the annoying bugs. Horses living in herds also fare much better because they form close friendships with other members and they help each other with grooming and also stand tail to head with each other and swat flies from each others' eyes =)

The roan coat coloring is pretty common and some breeds -- often outgrown, by the way.... Can't really tell what mix of breeds this little horse is. I do seem some draft & Haflinger characteristics in it...

I have no idea of course about it's owner and where his or her horses where breed and what they are. But I can tell you it was not all alone on the pasture and they where all rather different looking. Also, they all where at a stupid angle between the path and the ridge, slightly against the high sun. Most shots turned out crappy, as there where less becoming lens flares and boring poses.

I rarely take horse pictures, never could understand really why the other girls where always all so much fonder of them than of the other hoved animals. Interaction with overtly tame ones is okay but nothing I prefer particulary over petting a cow or other hoved confined animal aproaching on its own accord, coach rides are mildly amusing the scary way. But sitting on their backs is totally terrifying to me, it's so much worse than in a car, ship or plane.

Perhaps this is why I love Przewalski's and Zebras so much more than the rest of the equines, nobody would ever suggest riding on top of one of this pure wild creatures, and next in line of course cute wee donkeys, so close to the ground -- LOL!
