Actually it was not meant for this place. It was built in the late 19th century as a private yard chapel down by the river in Reinach, to comemmorate the drowned son of a miller named Eberle. 1921 it was dismantled and put up there as WWI soldiers memorial. At the last renovation in the 90's it was inside altered very strongly to give it a very modern "Post Vatican II" look with new very plain furniture and modernist artwork, but they missed out to start at the less visible things to renovate before the showy changes, problems with water and static. Seems it is to dangerous to let anyone inside now, according to a recent article in the paper....

There sure is a lot to marvel at the story of this chapel and the whole village, but IMO thats not because thats particulary well executed architecture. It looks of course quite good up in that location, as long they manage to keep it at least in a state they need no scaffolding and barriers and can allow benches directly by its side.

Then again, then there is the story of the little boy's brother... the controversial publisher who wrote "De profundis -- Der Pariser Friede vom Standpunkte der Kultur und Geschichte" and how the quiet private chapel for the poor innocent babe down by the river was eventually moved from the parental mill and rededicated as a widely visible especially representable landmark site for the villagers fallen in WWI.... to further pride and retaillation wishes. A history that has many paralels in other rural comunities but makes the legacy a bit difficult.
