A lovable dog called 'Brandy'

By Steve Brisk

I have some very fond memories of a dog called 'Brandy' this is one I recall vividly...

Around the mid 1970's there were two dogs that had been adopted by 2Div HQ and Signal Squadron (Bunde) BOAR. Brandy a lovable Labrador, used to get fed and watered by members of 2 Squadron. The other dog Kim, was looked after by the guys from 1 Squadron.

Each Squadron had it's own 'drinks' bar located within the accommodation blocks. Brandy would enter one of the bars with what appeared to be a very painful limp on one leg. He would limp over to who ever were propping up the bar; look at you with the biggest brownest saddest eyes in the world. Naturally, even the most hardened and meanest Soldier would not resist. Consequently loosing his heart out to this kind and sad look. He would think he must be in a lot of pain! So what is the best pain killer for a dog in pain and distress? And standing in a bar to-boot... You got it in one... 'BRANDY' not the cheap stuff I might add. Anyway after drinking a very large double-double-double from the cleanest ashtray around Brandy would lick his whiskers and clean up any drops that may have evaded his tongue. He would then bid you a kind farewell by walking off to the next unsuspecting drinker.

Nothing wrong in that you may say, but I swear he would be limping away on a different leg. Could it be the amount of alcohol he or I had consumed? Or was this a very clever dog who knew just how to get a decent drink out of a Squaddie.

See the story submitted by Henry Wynne and Martin (Strings) Stringer... 'Brandy' and 'Kim'
