All things bright and...By John and Audrey Stanson
One remembrance Sunday when our two daughters were aged 7 and 5 they decided they didn’t want to return to the Barracks with us they wanted to ride in a 3 tonner with the lads so they did. On the way back to barracks the lads were singing their usual bawdy songs when one thoughtful Signaler said “Hang on Lads we have two young ladies here and it is Sunday we should be singing Hymns. Heather what is your favourite Hymn”. To which Heather replied “All things bright and beautiful.” So, never wanting to disappoint a lady the lads started to sing dada dada, dada, All things bright and beautiful all creatures great and small dada...
Can you imagine what Joe public thought hearing a 3 tonner full of not so cute... Signallers singing Hymns. Mind you our girls loved it. Another incident which tickled me anyway took place on the same day. We were all sitting around the mess in Grace Road enjoying our drinks when John C (the all things bright and beautiful man) stood up and shouted “Anyone who can’t tap dance is queer”. And suddenly every man in the room stood up and tap danced. It was hilarious. The kids also had them singing “Old Macdonald had a Farm” !!! Yes you’ve guessed it in 55 Signal Squadron style naturally... |
