Beetle:"Patent Leather"
Fizz, you came across once again. Thanks for the info about this beetle, now I continue with what I learned from the computer. This old boy is not a harmful guy at all, rather helpful in that he helps eat away old decaying logs - one of which is in a hallow near my home. He is more than likely just resting here - not a lunch break.
A Odontoaenius disjunctus and in his earlier stage most attractive with a color of cherry pink. He and his live in the old decaying wood logs, and do not bother anyone. They make 17 different sounds to communicate with the other members, and to sound alarms against any danger coming their way. Although they do have wings, seldom are they used. So I shall be watching in "the old log" for them this summer, and offering them help rather than harm. One of their many common names is "Patent Leather" -- remember the days when that footwear was vogue? Thanks again, Marvin.
