Metasequoia glyptostroides "Dawn Redwood" is said to have been one of the greatest botanical find of the 20th century. Known only as a fossil up until then, where it was found in China during 1944. I have three growing in my yard, this however is found at the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The BBG has several of these -- big ones at that! Their bark is gorgeous!

Beautiful! We have only a regular Sequoia in the city park, but there is one of those in Ueberlingen that counts already as a tree monument, it's like 5 metres girth by now...

In the netherlands this Metasequoia is sometimes used as windshield around orchards, because the needles sometimes come between the fruit, but are not poisonous.
It's nice to see how these comments sharpen our knowledge.
