As Preferidas do Ano 1 / Best Of Year 1Sou utilizador do 23 desde 20 de Março de 2006. Desde então devo ter feito mais de 3000 fotografias até Março de 2007. Publiquei 365 fotos correspondentes ao mesmo período o que representa aproximadamente 10% das fotografias que fiz. Destas, seleccionei as minhas 42 preferidas. Porquê 42? Porque é o número de miniaturas que cabe na primeira página de um álbum do 23. Porquê estas 42? É o que penso explicar aqui. Why 42? Because this is the number of thumbnails that fits the first page of a 23 album. Why these 42? That's what I intend to tell you here.

Breeze Esta foi uma das primeiras fotografias que fiz depois de chegar à Madeira para trabalhar. Gosto especialmente da luz do entardecer, da cor, do fundo desfocado e da inclinação das plantas devido ao ligeiro vento que soprava na altura. This was one of the very first pictures I made after I arrived to Madeira for work. I specially like the late afternoon light, the colour, the out of focus background and the slight inclination of the plants due to the light wind blowing at the time. Local/Location: Ponta de S. Breeze Esta fotografia foi feita alguns minutos após a anterior. A mesma luz do entardecer a fazer sobressair a cor das flores, o segundo plano desfocado e novamente a ligeira inclinação das plantas. This picture was taken few minutes after the first one. The same late afternoon light making the colour of the flowers stand out, the out of focus background and again the slight inclination of the plants. Local/Location: Ponta de S. View Apesar de se tratar apenas de um contentor que serve de escritório de uma instalação de extracção de areia, a localização e o cuidado nos detalhes da cobertura e das plantas, transforma este local de trabalho em algo especial. Although it is only a container used as an office for sand extraction facility, the location and the care in the small details like the roof and the plants change this working place in something special. Stroll by the Sea Gosto desta fotografia principalmente pela sensação de paz que transmite. Pena que não se veja melhor a pessoa que corre sobre a parte mais baixa do paredão. Daniel & Co. Na ilha da Madeira é frequente haver uma camada de nuvens que distribui a luz de uma forma homogénea. É o que ocorre nesta foto. Para além da suavidade da Luz e das cores gostei dos barcos que parecem desejar voltar ao mar. Daniel é o nome de um dos barcos. In Madeira there is often a cloud layer that distributes the light in a uniform way. This is what happens in this picture. In addition to the softness of the light and colors I like the boats that seem to want to return to the sea. Daniel is the name of one of the boats. Sunny Day Começou por ser parte de uma experiência de profundidade de campo (existe uma fotografia irmã com um ponto de focagem diferente) mas a luz e as cores acabaram por a transformar numa das minhas preferidas. O azul no fundo é o mar. It started as part of a field depth experiment (there's a sister picture with a different focal point) but the light and colours made it one of my favorites. Regional Road ER107 Esta imagem representa bem o que eram, e felizmente ainda são, algumas das estradas na Madeira. Penso que transmite bem a ideias do espaço, distância e alguma vertigem. Neste caso trata-se da estrada para o Curral das Freiras. This picture represents well what were like, and still are, some of the roads in Madeira. I think it transmits well the ideas of space, distance and even some vertigo. In this case, it is the road to Curral das Freiras. Local/Location: Curral das Freiras - Madeira - Portugal

Valley Gosto da brancura das nuvens e da sucessão das diversas encostas com diversos tons, até ao momento em que a ilha termina. A partir daí é o mar que está por baixo das nuvens e estas podem, finalmente, acalmar. Uma das fotografias que mais uso para o ambiente de trabalho do meu computador. I like the whiteness of the clouds and the slopes with different tones to the point where the island ends. From that point it is the sea under the clouds and they can rest at last. Nuvens
Clouds Não é fácil explicar o que tem de tão especial esta fotografia em ter estado naquele local, naquele momento. Existe uma aparente impossibilidade de planos entre as nuvens e a restante paisagem. O tecto de nuvens é plano e horizontal no entanto parece inclinado porque a fotografia foi tirada numa direcção descendente. Como não existe nenhum elemento na paisagem que o revele, o resultado acaba por ser um pouco estranho. It is not easy to explain what is so special about this picture without being at that spot on that moment. There seems to be an impossible combination of planes, between clouds and lansdcape. The clouds ceiling is plane and horizontal yet it looks like it is sloping because the picture was taken with the camera pointing downwards. The result is a bit awkard because there isn't anything in the landscape that tells you about the inclination. Local/Location: Paúl da Serra - Madeira - Portugal 
Festas de S. Pedro
S. Pedro Festivities A fotografia foi tirada a partir de uma rua num plano superior ao do largo onde as pessoas se começam a juntar para uma longa noite de S. Pedro. Para além do ponto de vista inesperado, gosto das diferentes camadas da fotografia, desde a paz e serenidade da árvore à agitação das crianças a brincar. The picture was taken from a street on a higher level from where the tree is and where the people start to gather for a long S. Pedro night. Besides the awkard point of view, I like the different layers of the picture, from the peacefull and quiet tree to the turmoil of children playing. Local/Location: Ribeira Brava - Madeira - Portugal

Summer Fun Gostei do contraluz e da imagem de descontração e felicidade que as brincadeiras transmitem. I specially like the backlight and also the relaxing and happiness feeling transmited by the playing going on.

Esta fotografia foi tirada ao final da tarde, debaixo de um céu cinzento que filtrava e espalhava a luz.. A iluminação pública, ao fundo, já estava em funcionamento. Gosto do resultado precisamente por ter uma atmosfera um pouco irreal. This picture was shot at dusk, under a gray sky that filtered and spread the light. Anoitecer de Verão
Summer Nightfall A baía do Funchal e a vista da cidade, espalhada sobre a encosta suave da vertente Sul da ilha formam uma imagem única. Cada fim de tarde tem as suas próprias cores. O mar, geralmente calmo e sem ondulação, forma um reflexo perfeito do céu. Funchal's bay and the vue over the city, built on less steep area of the southern side of the island, make an unique image. Each sunset has it's own colours. The sea, most of the times very calm and with no waves, makes a perfect reflection of the sky. Local/Location: Funchal - Madeira - Portugal 
Abandonado
Abandoned Onde antes havia um centro comercial e um aldeamento turístico agora existem lojas abandonadas, piscinas em ruínas e casas que se tornaram e residências permanentes. E tudo devido à ampliação do aeroporto próximo. Gosto especialmente do contraste do letreiro decrépito com o azul imaculado do céu. Where once was a shopping center and a resort there are now abandoned shops, wrecked swimming pools and houses that became permanent residences. All this due to the expansion of the nearby airport. I specially like the contrast of the old sign with the perfect blue sky. Local/Location: Matur - Machico - Madeira - Portugal 
Luz
Light O Gavina, um barco de pesca, apesar de azul e da sua risca vermelha, ostentava um orgulhoso símbolo do Sporting pintado à mão junto à ponte. Nesta fotografia os reflexos do sol na água fornecem uma decoração adicional sempre em mutação. Acabei por travar conhecimento com a tripulação que me convidou para os acompanhar na pesca do atum. Infelizmente não chegou a acontecer. The Gavina, a fishing boat, although blue and with its red stripe, held a proud hand painted Sporting Portugal logo on its bridge wall. In this picture the sunlight reflection give it an aditional, always changing, decoration. I ended up meeting the crew that invited me to go with them on a tuna fishing expedition. Nuvens na Montanha
Clouds in the Mountain Gosto do contraste entre o branco das nuvens e o tom escuro da montanha e da forma como as nuvens parecem ter origem na encosta. I like the contrast between the white of the clouds and the dark tone of the mountains. I also like the way the clouds seem to raise from the slopes of the mountain. Posto Florestal
Forest Guard Station A zona do Fanal, no Paúl da Serra, é um local mágico. É aqui que se encontram algumas das árvores mais antigas da ilha, anteriores â chegada dos descobridores. A minha preferência por esta fotografia deve-se à forma como transmite a paz desta zona. The area of Fanal, Paul da Serra, is a magical place. Here is where you find some of the oldest trees on the island, dating to before the arrival of the explorers. My preference for this photograph is related to the way it conveys the peace of this area. Local/Location: Paúl da Serra - Madeira - Portugal 
Noite Laranja
Orange Night No meio da iluminação alaranjada, uma zona do porto onde a iluminação, de outro tipo, acaba por se destacar devido à sua cor. Para executar esta fotografia montei o meu mini tripé em cima do capot do carro. O resultado ultrapassou as expectativas em termos de exposição e definição. Amid the orange lighting, a port area where the lighting, being of a different type, highlights itself due to its different color. To take this photograph I set up my mini tripod on top of the car. The result exceeded the expectations in terms of exposure and definition. Local/Location: Caniçal - Madeira - Portugal

Mar Dourado
Golden Sea O edifício é o Centro Cívico da Ponta do Pargo, na ponta Oeste da ilha da Madeira. Está a uma distância de 2 kms do mar e mais de 350 m de altitude. O ângulo da fotografia permitiu que não ficasse visível qualquer porção da ilha transformando uma varanda num promontório sobre um mar imenso de cor dourada. A linha do horizonte encontra-se à altura dos candeeiros. A luz de fim de tarde, antecipando o por do sol, é perfeita. The building is the Civic Center of Ponta do Pargo, on the West tip of the Madeira Island. It is located 2 kms from the sea and at over 350 m of altitude. The angle of the shot would not allow any portion of the island to become visible transforming a balcony on a promontory over a vast golden coloured sea. The horizon is at the height of the lamps.
