The picture shows a news report from 11 March 2005 broadcast by Reuters news agency and sent by electronic mail to a Blackberry – a wireless telecommunications device popular at that time among fashionable, rich, boring people. Tung Chee-hwa had been the leader of Hong Kong since 1 July 1997, when the British handed over the city to China. The Chinese government had put him in charge because they liked him and they thought running Hong Kong would be easy (he was nice, but not very smart). Unfortunately, it was harder than anyone expected, and owing to Mr Tung’s bad luck and even worse decision-making and leadership skills, the formerly happy and prosperous people of the city became miserable and poor. After making his 3,718th mistake in mid-2003, the people finally lost their patience and marched in the streets to beg the Chinese leadership to take Mr Tung – by now known as ‘Tofu-for-brains’ – away. In those days, it was the Chinese Government’s policy to reject all requests from the people, to avoid giving them the idea that the Government served them, rather than the other way round.
