The picture shows Erich Mielke former head of Stasi, the intelligence and secret police force in East Germany, which was also responsible for censorship. 1989 Mielke try to assure people he is a real philanthropist and loves all the people he spy on, censor and oppress. Full (german) quote: "Ich liebe – Ich liebe doch alle – alle Menschen – Na ich liebe doch – Ich setzte mich doch dafür ein!"

And today: flickr loves us ... and again.. german people are censored.

Actually, though in the German mind they relate, those are two somewhat different things. Flickr is a part of a multinational corporation and I guess this makes it relatively close to governmental influence, but the main aim of any corp. is to make money, above all. I guess they hoped that their importance will make the limitations bearable, and for many German users, it still will. Apparently, losing even more money for a different reason we still don't know, is scarier to them.

Inkscar: I know. But 'Flickr loves you' is right now quite offensive to germans.

I hope that people don't think that there could be anything like love or spirit coming from a corporation. It has never been true. The bigger the influence, the less such concerns are.

Well, no offense, I don't wanna defense flickr's weak excuse. But as a matter of fact, the Stasi was a system, put into place by the government. Flickr however is following rules made up by the government. They are looking for the cheap way put to avoid conflicts. As much as I'm disgusted by either behavior, comparing flickr with the Stasi means confusing cause and consequence. So if anybody wondered where and when the paranoid laws passed by the German parliament hit the freedom of the internet, here is your answer. Wie war das? Wehret den Anfaengen?
