My country is divided into 24 districts called "provinces" where one of them is the northern Formosa. That name has an origin of the Latin that associates it to "Hermosa" (that is to say that in Spanish "beautiful")
It's very likely that the old name of Taiwan has a similar origin.
Thank you very much for your interest and it is a pleasure for me to make these clarifications.
Best regards
Gabriel
And I know enough about the development of languages to recognise that H in Latin often became F in Spanish and, vice versa, possibly under Arabic influence. So I used to live in the Madrid district of Hortaleza, which people think meant 'gardens' but which was originally Fortaleza, but altered under the Arabs.
Thank you for the explanation, Gabriel.
