Molokai Fish Ponds, James Brennan Molokai Hawaii
In ancient times Molokai had up to 75 fishponds and was known as the breadbasket for the archipelago. Today remnants of many, perhaps as many as 50, of these ponds can still be seen, and a few have recently been restored and are operational. Fish and limu (seaweed) are grown in these ponds. “Live rock” for the aquarium industry is a man-made alternative to live coral which is illegal to possess. |
