While lightning is the most destructive, it is not the most common source of surges. In most o the cases 80-90% of power disturbances come from other sources. The utility system interconnects many different types of loads that are difficult to control. In an effort to control the various loads, the utility relies on load switching. Feeder and capacitor switching have become a hazard for sensitive electronic equipment. Class B SPDs are installed inside the main distribution box, Class C SPDs are installed in the sub distribution board and class D are installed at individual power outlets. Surges are fast, short duration electrical transients in voltage or current in an electrical circuit. Voltage Strikes or Transient Voltage Surges are normally caused by lightning, power outages, tripped circuit breakers, short circuits, Power Company malfunctions, electromagnetic pulses, inductive spikes or power transitions in other large equipment on the same power line. These surges are sometime powerful enough that it can partially or completely damage your valuable electrical equipment.
