Terrscotta Panathenaic prixe amphora (jar)..Greek, Attic, blacjk-figure, ca. 530 BC..Attributed to the Euphiletos Painter..Obverse, Athena..Reverse, footrace....The Euphiletos Painter was trained in the black-figure technique. It is interesting to compare the firm, delibetate incision in his work with the looser, freer line of artsts like the Berlin Painter. ....From the second quarter of the sixth century BC on, victors in the contests of the Panathenaic festival in Athen were awarded a standardized amphora containing one metretes (about forty-one quarts) of olive oil from the sacred groves in Attica. The offical decoration on the front was a picture of a statue of Athena, fully armed. The scene on the back showed the event for which the pirze was awarded.....The footrace is one of the earliest kbown events in the Panathenaic games.
