Boxwood Rosary Bead with Scenes from Christ's Passion.Carved in South Lowlands, about 1500-1525..Dense and finely grained, boxwood is an exceptionally good material for meticulous carving. Microsculptures, such as these were carved in sections and fitted into the hollow wooden shell. The craftsmen may well have used magnifying glasses like those employed by a scholar in the foreground of the Condemnation scene seen here. The removable protective disk shows the Taking of Christ.
