Plaque with the Goddess Durga and Attendants India (West Bengal, Chandraketugarh), Shunga period, 1st century BC The main figure in this complex scene appears on many early plaques. Her identity has long been uncertian. Probably she is the goddess Durga. In late periods, Durga is usually shown slaying the buffalo demon, Mahisha. Then she has multiple arms, and most of her hands hold weapons. Here however, her attitude is peaceful. Sha has only two arms, and her eapons are thrust into her coiffure like haipins. Thsi plaque is typical of the chandraketugarh style, chatacterized by abundant decoration in low relief. The function of such plaques is unknown. They may haveserved as offerings or as icons for personal devotion.
