I was honored to be asked to be a guest lecturer at Harvard University in September of 2008. While there, I took the opportunity to visit two of their museums - the Harvard Museum of Natural History and the Peabody Museum of Anthropology. These were fascinating. The HMNH Hall of Mammals was like stepping into a time machine, this is what a Natural History museum looked like in the 1930s. It also served as a good example of the superiority of the Akeley method of taxidermy. These specimens were stuffed with hay instead of stretched over forms, so they show signs of decay and cracking. One fascinating display was the Glass Flowers, which were incredibly life-like. If you ever find yourself at Harvard, these museums are well worth a visit.
