WOW!!!! I like it very much!
long exposure??? how long?
some tuning? HDR?
HAL-9000 January 28, 2008, 04:40 PM
Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

It's not HDR, it's a single image, shot at 18mm, f/3.5, exposure 20 seconds at ISO 1600.
I increased the exposure about 1 stop in post-processing and applied some noise reduction.

wow

It's amazing how the stars are so clear given that there's quite a lot of thin cloud about. The technical info is interesting on its own. And isn't that the bottom half of the constellation Orion at the top right centre of the frame?
HAL-9000 January 29, 2008, 05:32 PM
StevieB, exactly. There were all three of the belt stars in the original picture, but I forgot to mention I tilted the image to get an even horizon.

Which camera did you use? And what kind of noise reduction? I think that if I had shot this with my 30D at the same settings the picture would have been a mess :)
PimpDaddy February 04, 2008, 06:09 PM
And faved of course :-P

I used a Canon 350D and the basic Lightroom noise reduction, no specialized software like Noise Ninja or something.
Is the 30D really noisier?
PimpDaddy February 05, 2008, 06:56 PM
Well that probably depends. Haven't tried the Lightroom noise reduction yet. Maybe I should give it a shot. By the way: Do you have a Mac? If yes, do you use Lightroom or iPhoto to manage all your photos?
HAL-9000 February 06, 2008, 11:09 PM
Yes, I'm using Mac. I switched from iPhoto to Lightroom a couple of months ago.

iPhoto is such a pain. I'm using Graphic Converter, nice and reasonably priced tool, although I might have to use something Adobe for RAW files...
PimpDaddy February 07, 2008, 01:46 PM
Okay. I'm using photoshop but I think I really need a good program for managing all my pictures.

@ Dhania: Why do you think iPhoto is such a pain?

dhania February 08, 2008, 08:00 AM
@PimpDaddy: well it starts with IPTC tagging... but doesnt end there.

I just don't like the complete handling, it seems to be counter-intuitive to me, which is exactly the opposite of what I expect from an Apple tool. But then I've been working with Windows photo databases for too long, probably. I don't know, it just doesn't click for me, using Iphoto always seems to be a hassle, looking for the functions I really need.

IPTC tagging? :-)

But thanks for sharing your observations!

I think I'll check out Graphic Converter.

But I think I'm gonna give it a chance soon. I've been "testing" it on a small scale when I needed to make some slideshows and the one thing that bothered me then was that iPhoto made copies of all the pictures that had to rotated(at least that is how I remember it).

dhania February 08, 2008, 10:02 AM
doesn't make iPhoto copies of about everything? :-)

Have you tried Phoenix Slides? Seems to be quite nice as viewer/slideshow tool http://www.blyt.net/ - still in my software to try folder

PimpDaddy February 08, 2008, 10:08 AM
No, you can uncheck the box that says "Copy images added to iPhoto to iPhoto library" or something like that. Just like in iTunes.

Haven't tried it :). I'm gonna add it to my protopage so I'll remember to check it out :-)
