I love it when I come across old machinery that I haven't a clue about their original function as it's a kind of mystery ( though your description tells me the origin) and it can be enjoyed for it's own look. I like the look of this and the rust.
I have something very similar that I will try to locate and post soon.

Greetings, nice to see you! I, too, LOVE rusty old machinery and, to me, this is a fabulous find. It's related to logging and milling, which used to be the main industry in this region.
