This monster was racing around the surf spot, Monday, practicing speed shifts. It was unbelievable! I have never heard a car shift so incredibly fast. I snapped this just as it was taking off, or the image would be nothing but a blur. I noticed that it had a slightly funny look to it, but I didn't know why until I started processing this image. Do the front wheels look larger than the backs to you too? Does anyone know more about this model?

Sometimes the beauty of a speed machine gives me the same thrill as a waterfall, a rainbow, or a friendship between a man and a giant bear. Maybe it's because my father named me after a racing driver...

Ah, yes, the 911's, high performance cousin.... It's got a 500hp engine (@9000 rpm) that gets ya 0-60 in ~3.2 secs. for the manual shift (3.8 for the automatic). You could own that baby for a mere $145K ;)

As far as the wheels.... In actuality, it's the rear tires that are wider -- 305 vs 245 -- and therefore, technically bigger... The front tires are meant to have a slightly higher aspect ratio than the back, though.... The width diff. is due to the need to traction with all that hp from the rear mounted engine, which the higher aspect ratio in the front gives you better control.... All that said, the tires still go onto a 20" rim on all 4 corners... You can just barely see the height diff. between the front & back tires -- but you'd have to have a very good eye for minute differences in spaces --- which you apparently do.

Anyway... Nice find & capture =) Fun little car -- if you ever get a chance to get behind the wheel, it's a real treat =)

Damn, Fizgig, we feel like two peas in a pod, tonight! I just got rid of my 944, last month. Loved it on the mountain road on the way home with its neutral handling.
Regarding the GT3. I can't believe they would put so many ponies under such a light car without all-wheel drive. Even though it raises the unladen weight. I sold the 944 to a driving teacher for the Porsche Club of America. One day he drove up in his GT3, parked it, and revved it way up before turning it off. "Thanks for the organism!" I said.

Yeah... I'm not a fan of putting so much hp in something too light to handle it. I took one of these things off the line -- quite easily -- with a 220hp, FWD @5500 rpm.... Left it in the dust 'cause it just didn't have the weight to keep the tires on the pavement.... Of course, once it got goin' it smoked the smaller engine -- but, at a 1/4 mi. with a good driver, that smaller front mounted engine might just win ;) IME, these types of cars excel at speed-to-speed acceleration more than 0-60 from a standing start. Now, a 500hp FWD would totally smoke the same hp RWD --- even if heavier.

I guess we both like our cars =) I have an album full of 'em should you be interested -- ya might like the exotics from the NY Intern'l Auto Show in particular ;)

Although I enjoyed my foray through your "road warriors" folder, I've been pretty seriously spoiled since Sterling Moss dropped me into the 300SLR he won the Mille Miglia in, the year before. Its transmission was about two feet across, with the clutch on the left side and the brake and accelerator pedal on the right. I was eleven.
