Every guard dog has a soft side.Every guard dog has a soft side. One time I was at a junkyard getting an auto part. The owner told me I'd find it down in front, and that Butch would walk me down there. Butch was a huge German Shepard.He walked right next to me, and I talked to him as we walked, telling him what a good dog I thought he was. Offhandedly (wait for it...) I reached down to pet him on the head. As my hand went down, his mouth came up. He had my whole hand in his mouth before I even knew what happened. His teeth pressed into my flesh just hard enough that I couldn't remove it, but not hard enough to break the skin. He looked up at me with big brown eyes. "I bite," he said, "Don't pet me," Then, he slowly released my hand. "Boy, am I sorry," I said, "I didn't know." Every hair on my body was standing straight up."Thanks for leaving my hand on," I said, quivering with fear. Having discussed the rules, we continued our walk down to get my part. I gained great respect for junkyard dogs that day.
