From a glass blower friend.

I wonder if the glass blower got the inspiration from those cave swallow nests than look like they're made from the most fragile glass.... and, unfortunately, are most famous because they're the main ingredient in bird's nest soup (yuck!).

It must look amazing with light shining through it...

I tried a few shots with flash and was not as happy with the result, and a few shots with the Christmas tree lights behind it, but thought this was the best shot. I think I just failed to capture it well, and might have tried with a bright backlight for better success.

Set the camera up for tungsten lighting, turn off the flash, set ISO to auto... Set the ornament down on a dark, non-reflective surface (a dark colored towel works great). Use a flashlight to shine a beam on the deco from above.... Darken the room.... Take a few shots in macro & normal modes, avoiding angles directly into the beam of the flashlight. Be sure to give a bit more distance than if you were shooting in daylight to avoid light trails. I think you'll get the desired effect.

Hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice ;)

Thank you, Fizgig. When unsolicited advice can improve my technique, I welcome it. Unfortunately, The ornament is now a seven-hour drive away. We have just returned from Sparks Nevada where I photographed it on my daughter's Christmas tree. There were a few shots where it looked silver, if you are interested in seeing more of it.

Although nothing is written in stone, I will jump on the opportunity if I get it. It is a very interesting object!
