But then, I never liked letting the truth interfere with a good story. :-)
I love cedar wood what ever the colour, it is more the smell of the stuff. Bought a lot of cedar things while we lived in the states, got several bookmarks, cloth hangers, little heartshapes for the sock drawers and even a linnen chest. Unfortunately most of that lost the great smell since the time, and likely also the debugging properties, but compared to unsealed furniture from other wood it held it's original antique rose colour rather well.
Use 80 or 100 grit so it doesn't clog up too fast, and avoid breathing the dust.
