It is an opiate analgesic that comes in different forms:
Immediate-release (Tramadol 50mg), and
Extended-release (Tramadol 100 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg)
The immediate-release form works quickly and can be taken in different pain conditions, and its effects last up to 4 to 6 hours. Whereas the extended-release form is only for severe ongoing pain, its effects last up to 36 hours.
Dosage administration
In chronic pain (Immediate-release): Tramadol 25mg every morning in the starting therapy. The dose may increase to 25-50 mg every 4-6hr as needed; if the patient didn't get therapeutic effects. The maximum strength of the daily dose should not exceed 400 mg.
In Acute pain: Tramadol 50 mg to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours or as directed by the physician.
Extended-release dose administration: Tramadol 100 mg oral tablet once daily; your doctor may increase the dose by 100 mg/day every five days if needed.
Do not exceed the limit of a daily dose of more than 300 mg.
Conversion from immediate release to extended release: Total daily dose to 100 mg as per the doctor's instruction.
