Wine shop advertising.
The pilaster at the entrance bears the painted sign, depicting four pitchers (cucumae) of different colours, with the drinks sold here and a listing of the price of wine. NOLA is the announcement of a show. The shop may have been a caupona (inn) where drinks and food were served. In Roman cities it was not customary to have lunch (midday meal) at home. Semo Sancus, a divinity often compared to Hercules, who was said to protect business, with the inscription ad Sancum is seen at the top of the sign. |
