Scottish Captain Neil McEacharn first saw the ‘garden’ in 1930, and set about building the garden which we see today, collecting precious plants from all over the world He dedicated most of his life to this work. He was from Scottish nobility who owned a large shipping company, as well as iron and coal mines and much land. This wealth allowed him to dedicate himself to the two great passions of his life: botanic gardening and travelling. Captain McEacharn donated his property to the Italian government. The gardens have been open to the public since 1952.
