San Marino Basilica
San Marino like the Vatican City is unique in being a country within a country, totally surrounded by Italy. For whatever reason they did not join the new republic created by Garibaldi in the 1850's. The Basilica is dedicated to St, Marinus, whose followers founded a community where San Marino stands today. The church is neoclassical in style and it is situated at the Piazzale Domus Plebis. Saint Marinus was the founder of the chapel and monastery of San Marino which was built at the place of the old church from VII century in 1836. Relics of St. Marinus are kept inside. |
