Assayers Lab

The job of an Assayer was to test or assay samples of the orestone to ascertain the percentage of metal that could be extracted from the orestone, so the orestone could be valued. Mostly copper ore was assayed but other metal ores could be assayed here also. When sampled and assayed the orestone would be purchased by buyers from the copper foundries in South Wales and taken away by ship to be smelted in great quantities. At the height of the copper ore boom up to 14 ships a month would come to Morwellham Quay to purchase and collect the ore
