The Curious Story Of The Rancher And His Strange Green Rock
There's an old story about a son who inherits his father's successful ranch... But, because he was raised in the city by relatives, he has absolutely no idea about how to manage a ranch, manage employees, or raise livestock...(It was quite the professional operation!) One miserable rainy day he's about to give up and sell the ranch when he notices a handwritten letter his father left him... The letter is in his father's writing desk taped to a strange green rock. The letter tells him that if he wants the ranch to flourish that all he has to do is carry that magic green rock around the land every day. It says that he doesn't have to motivate the workers. Because they know what to do. He doesn't have to do anything except watch what's happening so long as he keeps on carrying that magic rock around when he makes his daily rounds. He's a bit skeptical at first but he follows his father's instructions to the word... Every day he walks around his father's land with the rock in his pocket and he says hello to the hired hands. He watches them work. He learns from them. When he has a problem, he just asks himself what his father would do... Or he asks the experienced ranch hands for their advice... That gives him the answer to most of his problems... Then when he's made his daily rounds he retires for the night... Much to his surprise, the ranch flourishes over the years, his herd grows, his family is fed, and he makes a profit every time he goes to market. Naturally, after few short years he loses the rock. Maybe it falls into a stream while he's chasing down a stray... Maybe it falls out of his pocket at the market... Maybe it just vanishes... Of course, he's a bit worried about losing the rock at first... But with nothing much to do about it he keeps making his daily rounds... Much to his surprise the ranch doesn't wither away. In fact, he has his best year ever. Over the years, he comes to realize that the "magic" was never in the rock... The rock didn't make him into a rancher... It was inside of him all along...
