I got two gas containers and strapped them to my bike for the desolate stretch in Baja. I was lucky I got two, because part way through the drive in the desert, one of them sprang a leak because it was rubbing against the metal guard over the drive belt. I was able to salvage some gas out of it, but having a backup saved my butt. The problem though is that I went to move the backup so that the same thing didn't happen to it, and I ended up moving it to the back of the rack, that created some nice leverage force on the rear fender where it was in contact with the rack, leading to the fender getting dented. stupid stupid stupid.
