Ikeda Hirochika - Funaosa Nikki - A Captain's Diary - 船長日記
Excellent true story.

In 1813 a Japanese ship was damaged in a storm, it's mast and rudder broken. The ship could not return to Japan.
This book is the story of the captain Jukichi and his four-year odyssey across the Pacific, through what was then Russian California, Alaska, Kamchatka and finally back to Japan in 1817.
