Found this little gem at the charity shop (aka thrift store), just the other day. Picked it up for one dollar. Looks like it is in perfect working order. Now, I just need to get some film for it.

I know that film is once again being made for the Polaroid brand instant cameras, by PolaroidOriginals.com. Luckily enough, they are even selling through Amazon.com. So, it won't be long before I can try this classic camera out.

Well, trash for some, a tresaure for others...

I never ever owned an instant camera. When that stuff was new and the spoilt teenies getting all the fashionable stuff from their folks had one, my schoolmates took their shots much like the kids of today do their cell phone snapshots, sometimes put a note with a feltpen on and pinned them somewhere on a board or wall openly to see for all until they faded and then they did throw them into a shoebox or the wastebin if no teacher did confiscate it before it got to old to giggle over. I featured in quite a few polaroid shots by the in-crowd, often with negative coments on them about my clothes, my hair, my face or my arse. Can't say I would like to own one myself for all the fond memories....

I can certainly understand that, Sonja. I learned at a very early age that kids can be real nasty to one another, as I had a stutter when I was younger. So, I grew a pretty thick skin at a young age. But that's the past. I've forgiven them for being stupid children with no sense of empathy or grace.

Regarding the camera, however, my parents had one and used it quite a bit. They have boxes of albums full of Polaroid photos of us on our summer vacations, birthdays and holidays. So, it was nice to see.

I say, if you happen across an instant camera in your travels, pick it up and start replacing those bad memories with good ones!

I don't know how your folks still can have anything in that boxes they can look at. Polaroids fade so fast also when stored without light and get weird colours. I have a few old polaroids, not that old as from my school days, but by a coworker of my husband sneaking about with an instant camera and giving him then a few shots of himself at work as a gift. That was somewhen around 1993. I put them into the photo album with stick-on corners and there they stayed, well protected against light, but by now it does not at all look like my husband when he was much younger and quite dapper in his company coat but just like the green Hulk with a pale halo. Whilst in some ways that is sort of hillarious, it is still offputting about the medium and the ways it changes over time.

Well, all I can say is that, the few Polaroids that my mother sent to me a few years ago (from her photo albums) are still okay. They have yellowed a little bit, over the years, but I still know who I'm looking at and what was happening at the time. And these were from the early 80s.

I can only assume that, for the most part, the rest of photos are in a similar state. But, I haven't seen the photo albums, myself, for many years. I'll have to scan one of the photos I have sometime for you to see.

Ah.... This one brings back memories =) We had a Polaroid camera for a short time, too. Our photos from it are still decent, too --- some from as far back as 1981. Ours are in family albums so they haven't faded much, though they have yellowed a bit.

That's great, Fizgig! Glad to hear that your Polaroid photos are holding up to the test of time.

My Mum used to swear by hers and I think she still has it. This was as far as she went along the road to technology - no mobile phones or laptops for her! I will have to investigate (but first I will find out if she is interested and if it would be easy to get the stuff she would need!)
If you do find out more, I would be pleased to know. In the meantime I will go on to the link you kindly provided!
Cheers!

Andy, I think your Mom has got it right! When we get a chance to try the new film for these cameras, I'll be sure to post our findings here.
David.
