Know what makes those slides even more fun? A nice coating of snow >=)

Snow? What's that? This is Monterey California near the beach. Got some you would like to get rid of? :=)

Had some this morning ;) Turned to a cold rain, though =( See, and if one's inclined to be creative..... Can turn them slides into luge runs... Or would that be too mean? >=)

I used to ride the skeleton (like luge but head first, nose to the ice) at the Cresta in Switzerland when I was in my early twenties. There are few more exciting things to do. The most exciting part, however, was setting up a turn wrong and sailing off the high side with a 60lb sled. Though your idea may sound mean, the kids would probably love it!

We used to do that, too.... Except for not having an actual skeleton type sled.... Oh, and the water we poured on that really steep hill out behind the barn to ice it over during the night probably wouldn't have passed for a real -- or safe -- track.... But, wait, there're more similarities.... We used a hand-made wooden sled with steel runners for the sled.... The side of the barn made for a great and effective braking system. And of course we'd take that 1/4 mi. iced over downhill head first with no helmet -- if ya "flew over the side of the track" the trees kept you from flying too far too fast and were good for catching the hats, gloves, boots that flew off too... LOL! If only we'd known what we were doing had a name -- besides "stupid", "unsafe", "suicidal", & "FUN!" But what do 10-15yr. olds know.... >=) It's probably a good thing we didn't know about proper equipment and tracks and all that 'cause we were too poor to have had access to any of those things --- heck, it was too rich for even our imaginations to go there ;)

Glad to hear that I wasn't the only kid to have that kind of fun. We had a tree, too. Off the turn called Shuttlecock, except that it killed people who were unfortunate enough to go off the wrong spot on the turn. The first run down usually scared the pants off people. "If you go off", they said, "make sure to throw the sled away!" It was a bonified bobsled track. I only got to do it because my friend was a member there and paid for my membership, too. He had been an exchange student from Zurich, and he returned the good care when I came to visit him.
